The Hebron Herald celebrated its 100th birthday in February, 1998 and has been an important part of the community of Hebron for 102 years.  Because of the foresight of the many publishers through the years, only a very few of those papers are missing from the Heralds' files, leaving a true history, in print, of the happenings in our community, state and nation.

Jane Brandt, publisher of the Herald, will complete 42 years with the newspaper on July 1, 2007.  She outranks all others in length of time at the Herald.

Since she arrived at the Herald July 1, 1965, many changes have been made at the Herald when it was converted from the "hot type" method of printing to the "offset" printing method.

In 1974 Mrs. Brandt also began publishing "The Richardton Merchant" for the city of Richardton, a bi-monthly publication.  In addition to the two newspapers, advertising specialties such as jackets, caps, pens, cups and t-shirts are also available at the Herald.

The history of newspapering in Hebron includes six different names -- "The Howler", "The Hebron Tribune", "Hebron Farmers Press", "Die Wacht Am Missouri und Hebron Anzeiger", "Die Wacht Am Missouri" and finally, "The Hebron Herald."

"The Howler" was a hand-printed sheet published March 18, 1894 when Volume 1, No. 1, was printed.  "The Howler" was printed "semi-occasionally or whenever we feel that way."

The "Die Wacht Am Missouri" was established in 1898 and was actually the grandparent of the Hebron Herald as it is known today.  This was a German language paper and was printed in Mandan.

The "Die Wacht" was later published in New Salem in connection with the New Salem Anzeiger until about 1907 when it was published in Hebron and was named "Die Wacht Am Missouri and Hebron Anzeiger".

Publishers through the years have included Wilhelm Klimmeck, Max Boehmer, Carl Semrath, George Landon, Eugene W. Sperry, P.S.Jungers, W.P.Thurston, Edward Sullivan, Theodore H. Mark, H.J.Spiller, Irvin and Joyce Lang and Richard Berg.

The Herald office has been in a number of locations through the years.  In 1930 it was located under the old City drug store building and for a number of years it occupied space in the basement of Urban's Inc. (now "Our Relatives").  It was moved into the Frank building on Main Street in 1959, where it is now located.
