What's Cooking - by Jane Brandt

Most residents of Hebron remember Walter and Irene Klick. Walter was not only one of the owners of Urban’s Inc. but was very active in community affairs and a devoted member of the Hebron Lion’s Club.
His wife, Irene Rahl, had come to Hebron as a young woman to teach school here, and that is when they met.
Both Irene and Walter became my friends. Irene "almost" celebrated her 100th birthday. She passed away just a short time before her birthday.
I was very pleasantly surprised Monday to receive an announcement of her sister, Marie Kohlmann’s, 95th birthday. I was fortunate to meet the members of both Walter and Irene’s families because of our friendship.
Marie lives in Fargo. I wish her a very happy birthday. I have her address here at the Hebron Herald if any of our readers also knew Marie and would like to send her a card.
    Happy birthday, Marie!

I had a very interesting weekend in Grand Forks where I attended the spring conference of the North Dakota Professional Communicators. At one time we were known as the North Dakota Press Women but when men wanted to join the group, it was thought that the name should be changed.
I’ll just mention three things that happened at the conference. One was a workshop about last year’s Northwood tornado. Two officials were present to tell us about their experience in crisis and recovery. It’s so hard to believe that in a matter of a few minutes, an entire town can be wiped out.
Another special event was a tour of UND’s Center for Aerospace Sciences. A young man named Ryan headed up the tour. Not only do students at UND study there but men and women from many countries including Japan, China, Germany, etc. come to Grand Forks to learn how to pilot airplanes.
Most of our sessions were held at the UND School of Medicine. I found that one part of the building is the old St. Michael’s Hospital (renovated) and there is another new and ‘huge’ section of the building.
I was born at the St. Michael’s Hospital and during a break, three of us talked a fellow named Mario to give us a tour of the facility. When we reached one of the floors he said "Do you see the big windows in these offices? Employees in all the other offices are envious of those windows." We said, yes, we can see the big windows. "Well," he reported, "those were the windows in the nursery and your Dad probably stood right there, looking through those windows, at his new-born daughter."

I thought that was pretty special.

Birthday Fortunes by Al Lennick
According to the Hebron Lion’s Calendar, Kirk Krein, Keith Wallin, Vickie Tibor and Weston Leutz celebrated a birthday April 17. There are fortunes that go along with birth dates and this is what it says for April 17 – My book says "You are an ardent reader and strive to improve yourself generally. You are sensitive and when happy are extremely exuberant and when unhappy, depressed. You are affectionate and require a deep and understanding love, which you will reciprocate.
The next day, April 18, Laurie Hauser and Janell Hellman had a birthday. This is the information in my deceased wife’s birthday book about that date – the book says, "You possess a sunny disposition, are moderately patient and sincere. You are ambitious and strive to do the unusual. You have intellectual ability and physical strength to help and guide you."
Lisa Raber, Brock Carter and Norbert Underdahl celebrated their birthday Sunday, April 20. The book says "Your positive and headstrong ways will carry you over many obstacles to success. You are influenced by praise and flattery, rather than by direct appeal or command. You have your family’s respect and devotion."
And one more – April 23 when Bradley Greff, Florence Wiege and Dorothy Mutschelknaus have birthdays, according to the Lion’s birthday calendar. The book says, "You like and desire fine surroundings and are unhappy without them. Your love is masterful and passionate.

I hope everyone mentioned above had a very happy birthday. I like "happy birthday fortunes".
